Coaching your internal hike
On a recent trip to Nova Scotia, my family and I had the opportunity
to drive thru the Cabot Trail. Situated on 185 miles which includes a
drive thru the Cape Breton Highlands Park, it was a spectacular way
to see the beauty of the Maritime’s.
The highlight was a hike up the Skyline trail. We were told it was not
a difficult trail and the views were spectacular. We began the hike
with a lot of energy and made it to the first look-out point in easy
time. After the high of this first stop, it felt like forever to get to the
next one and when we finally did, it was at the top of the cliff with
amazing 360 degree views. From there, there was an option to go
down the side of the mountain to see even more spectacular views. I
chose to sit that one out, while my husband and son moved on. I
knew when I had hit my peak and preferred to enjoy this moment up
top instead.
After spectacular views, it was time to head back. This was now
harder as all our energy had been expended and parts of the hike
were uphill. My son eventually gave me his arm, and suddenly, I felt
lighter and had the energy to finish the hike. It felt wonderful to
complete this hike as a family!
As a professional coach, I am often asked what coaching is all about
and why someone would need a coach.
That hike is why.
There are times when one is building a career, growing a business
or navigating life when suddenly, it feels challenging. When you are
not sure when you will get to your look out point, where to get your
energy to continue, how to listen to yourself and honor your limit
once you reach “your” peak. A coach can support you thru all that as
they are trained with a skill that others won’t have.
The internal hike you take as you travel your work and life trails is
much the same as the Skyline trail hike. And while some people like
to hike alone, it is a harder climb to make.
If you have an option to work with someone whose only goal is to
help you reach yours, it allows you to focus all your energy on
getting there and it enables you to enjoy the moment once you do!
The next time you embark on a new challenge, stop, and ask
yourself, do I really want to do this hike all on my own?
